About the Afador Dog

The Afador is not a Purebred and is a mixed breed dog. A Breed that's not often talked about due to its rare presence. It is a cross between the Noble Afghan Hound and the Labrador Retriever. The body shape looks most like the labrador retriever while the head resembles the Afghan Hound. The afador is a rare designer dog breed that is unfairly not talked much about. They fall into the groups of Hound dogs as well as sporting dogs because of their ancestry mix. The afadors ioverall are an intelligent, energetic, independent, affectionate, and very loyal dogs that make for great companions as well as a working dog as well as a good guard dog due to its protectivness nature. Since it has a working heritage, it is an exuberant breed that thrives on activity. It usually remains calm indoors but needs daily outdoor exercise.

The Afadors make excellent family pets and are more comfortable around older children, this is because the children are less likely to poke and prod at the dog. They are great with children but aren’t fans of being teased by them. Due to the breed's intelligence and stubborn streak, you'll want to make sure that both the dog and your children are properly trained to be around each other from day one. They make excellent guard dogs as they will bark and howl when a stranger enters the house or room and is an ideal dog for those who want an energetic family pet that brings watchdod benefits. The Afadors are considered not be high maintenance, but as with other dog breeds, understanding their history and lineage is very important. The Afadors are not suited for Novice or new dog owners and are usually for the experienced dog parent.

The Afador is not a dog that is suited to live in an apartment. Their energy levels are naturally too high for them to be cooped up in a small living space. Due to their thick and fuzzy coats they perform and behave better in cooler environments rather than warm and dry environements

Nutrition Needs for the Afador

Being Active dogs, the Afadors like most pets require a healthy diet and as a medium sized dog, they should be fed about two to three cups of premium dog food per day, depending on your Afador’s size and age. Health Needs for the Afador

The afadors are considered to be healthy pets, however, understanding its history and lineage can help understand some of it issues that may get over time. However, as the Afador's are pretty much a new hybrid (originated in year 2000) and rare, not a great deal is known about them. However, they are known to have a low pain threshold so even minor injries will seem very painfull to them.

In consultation with your vet, tailor a diet regime of healthy foods, good excercise and Nutrition supplements like salmon oil, prebiotic and electrolytes can ensure that your dog has a happy and healthy lifestyle for years to come. With all breeds, there are certain health conditions more prevalent to that specific breed. It's important to acknowledge here that the right diet, providing all essential vitamins and minerals, will go a very very long way to mitigating against and minimising the severity of breed-related conditions.

Kosiproducts offer a range of natural nutritional healthy supplements, providing for a convenient and simple way to enhance the nutrient density of their food, giving you peace of mind that all health and happiness bases are covered. Remember...Healthy Pets are Happy Pets!

Some of the more common health problems Afadors suffer from include:

  • Bloat
  • Hip and Elbow Dysplasia
  • Subaortic Stenosis - an inherited cardiovascular condition
  • Acute sensitivity to any type of drug.

Excercise Needs for the Afador

The Afador dog, being a medium sized dog as well as a high energy dog, it needs atleast 45 Minutes of excercise a day to get rid of all of their extra energy. As the Afador is a mix of the Afghan Hound and the Labrador retriever, they can become couch potatoes, lazy and obese if their excercise needs are not met. The Afadors needs to be played with and not just left alone to play by himself. Not only playing with your afador helps to build his muscle tone, but by playing with him and taking him out for walks you will build a 'personal bond' with your dog which will last a lifetime. The Afadors love to run and play, an off-leash park and tennis ball should be considered part of his regular routine. Although, do keep in mind that the Afador is part hound. They may take off on “the hunt” of something that they picked up on.

Training and Socialization Needs for the Afador

Socialising is an essential part of the Afadors training as it helps to cope with strangers and new faces. Socializing needs to start early during its puppyhood. While their highly lit spirit makes them fun to play with, they can be dangerous for little kids as kids can topple if the dog decides to jump or press itself too hard against them, so early socialization and training around people is critical. Afador's are really intelliegent dogs, and becuase of this it regards following orders and commands as not a requirement. You will need to be persistent, consistent and dont get frustrated, he should pick up basic commands fairly quickly for as long as you keep him interested and rewarding. But in general the Afador is quite good to train for as long as the aloofness and independece of the hound is controlled. For owners not upto training their dog then a professional dog trainer would be a good investment. To help it cope with guests or visitors to your house for example:

  • Keep it on the leash
  • Command it to sit or stay
  • Extend your hand and greet the guests with a handshake, sending a signal that it's ok!
  • Ask visitors not make direct eye contact, as it helps in calming him

In general, The Afador is highly intelligent but can be a handful to train, early socialisation is highly recommended. When properly trained the Afador is known to listen to commands with few reptitiions needed.

Grooming Needs for the Afador

The Afadors inherit their coat from the Afghan Hounds with long, fine fur. The fur is of medium density and is great for keeping the Afador warm during cold tempratures. As in most dogs shedding is inevitable and lots of grooming will be required. The Afadors shedding is considered to be low because the Afghan hound is hypoallergenic but the labrador retriever is a moderate shedder, but in order to keep his coat looking sleek and healthy, regular grooming and baths are highly recommended. It is recommended that brushing his coat once or twice weekly should be sufficient for the Afador, and will help avoid matting, tangles and dirt from accumulating as well as weekly ear cleaning is advised to avoid wax and debris build up. When brushing the Afadors hair, you should use a metal comb and bristle brush, combing one handful at a time starting from the bottom to keep it free of tangles. Shampooing the Afador will be a regular requirement, a mild shampoo is recommended, check with your veterinary care provider for recommendations on which shampoo to use. The most common Afador colours include black, brown, grey, red and fawn.

Comfort Needs for the Afador

The Afador is not suited to live or be raised in an apartment setting. It is also not suited for the warmer climates due to its high energy levels and his thick coat, he is more suited for the colder climates. A resonable sized house with a back yard or garden is more suited for the Afador. Your pet needs to be treated just like a member of the family and needs to feel like a member of the familiy.

Just like all of us, dogs also need a place of their own, their own little corner, that is why Dog Beds are an essential part of a dogs daily life. It is the place where they feel safe, kosi and comfortable. A dog bed in the house is where the dogs home is, the rest of the home belongs to others. Just like your children retreat to their rooms and the adults retreat to their corners in the home, so does the dog retreats to its dog bed. Dog and Pet Beds are essential so as to ensure that the Pet does not feel alienated or a ‘2nd class citizen’ in the home. The dog bed is like a place of refuge and space. Kosiproducts offer three main types of dog beds to help your dog feel comfortable and at home as well giving your dog that beauty sleep it needs. • Ensuring the dog bed is large enough for the dog to lounge on and sleep on.
