Excercise Needs for the Azawakh

Due to the high levels of energy and its hunting nature, the Azawakh needs a lot of excercise daily, long brisk walks as well being left to run on open ground as well. Like some other Sighthounds, they can be referred to as speedy couch potatoes. Providing they get enough daily exercise, and the opportunity to release some of their energy, they will often then be happy to laze around on the couch.

Training and Socialization Needs for the Azawakh

The azawakh's are generally a difficult dog to train and requires experienced parents and is nor ideal for first time dog owners. They are not good for kids, particularly in isolation. However, if the it grows up with the kids as a pup with plenty of relaxed and pleasent environement then some of the risks can be mitigated. They should be given plenty of opportunity to to run free in open ground as this is their instict nature, as well as having long walks as well. The Azawakhs, if threatened can become very protective of their territory and humans. Their reaction to strangers can vary from friendly, to uninterested, to wary or aggressive. Early and appropriate socialization, and ongoing positive reinforcement training around new people will be important to avoid them developing an extreme reaction to strangers. Azawakh usually have a strong affinity towards those of the same breed. They often get on well in a multi-dog household, although they can be dominant.

Grooming Needs for the Azawakh

The Azawaks are very low shedders due to the Thickness and texture of the ooat, they pretty much have a low maintenance grooming need, requiring a rub down once a week. They do not like the cold climate due to the thin coat, minimal body fat and desert origins. Hence, you would need ensure that they remain nice and warm during winter months.

Comfort Needs for the Azawakh

The Azawakh's although can live in an apartment providing their physical excercise needs are met daily, but they are best suited to a home with a reasonably large sized fenced yard or garden. Your pet needs to be treated just like a member of the family and needs to feel like a member of the familiy. The Azawkhs's when indoors do become couch potatoes and just like lazing around. We recommend a Large to X-Large Dog Bed for its comfort, sleeping and lounging requirements.

Just like all of us, dogs also need a place of their own, their own little corner, that is why Dog Beds are an essential part of a dogs daily life. It is the place where they feel safe, kosi and comfortable. A dog bed in the house is where the dogs home is, the rest of the home belongs to others. Just like your children retreat to their rooms and the adults retreat to their corners in the home, so does the dog retreats to its dog bed.
