About the Australian Terrier Mixed Breed Dog

  • The Australian Terrier originated in Australia in the Early 19th Century.
  • A very happy dog by nature is bred to hunt rodents and snakes
  • Affectionate to people and has a clever sense of humour, an overall delightful and obedient companion.
  • A high energy Dog with high levels of intensity, they need plenty of excercise and are exceptionally playful.
  • They have a high Prey drive and a high level of tendency to Bark and Howl.
  • The AKC Standard calls him "spirited, alert, courageous, and self-confident, with the natural aggressiveness of a ratter and hedge hunter."
  • Though small, the Australian Terrier is an alert watchdog with keen senses.
  • The Australian Terrier can be scrappy with other dogs of the same sex. But most individuals are willing to coexist peacefully with other pets.
  • Quick to learn, an Aussie is mostly willing to please, though he definitely has his independent moments and must be taught who is in charge.
  • Running away from you. Like all dogs, Australian Terriers must be taught to come when called.
  • The Australian Terrier is the perfect size for apartment or condo living, but only if you can train him to control his barking or be there to keep it to a low roar.
  • Australian Terriers are not a great choice if you have cats, and they don’t tend to get along with other dogs, particularly if both are males.

Nutrition Needs for the Australian Terrier Dog

  • The Australian Terrier should do well on a high quality diet with nutrients and supplements.
  • Any diet should be appropriate for the dogs age. Small dogs have a fast metabolism, meaning they burn energy at a high rate, although their small stomachs mean that they must eat little and often with appropriate levels of key nutrients and smaller kibble sizes to suit smaller mouths. This also encourages chewing and improves digestion.
  • They are good with both commercially maunfactured as well as home made food. Over feeding of the Terriers, particularly giving them too many treats can lead to obesity resulting in a whole host of further Health problems.
  • Providing them with the right Nutrients and Supplements with their meals will help in avoiding some of the Health problems that the Australian Terriers may encounter as they grow up and get older. A proper diet includes all-important nutrients, minerals, vitamins, fats, carbohydrates, proteins, and a source of fresh, clean water.
  • We have listed below some of the nutrients and supplements that we offer which have proven to give health benefits for all dogs as well as for breeding purposes.

Health Needs for the Australian Terrier

The Australian Terrier is a sturdy and healthy dog, but like all dogs they too have a few health problems:

  • Patellar luxation. Patellar luxation is when the knee joint slides in and out of place, causing pain. This can be crippling, although many dogs lead relatively normal lives with this condition.
  • Legg-perthes causes a deformity of the hip joint ball. The result is arthritis or inflammation of the hip joint. It's unclear what causes legg-perthes, but it may be inherited or related to injury.
  • Diabetes mellitus prevents the body from regulating blood sugar levels properly. A diabetic dog will eat more food to try to compensate for the lack of glucose reaching the body's cells — but he will lose weight because food is not being used efficiently. Symptoms of diabetes are excessive urination and thirst, increased appetite, and weight loss.
  • Allergies. Aussies can be prone to allergies. There are three main types: food allergies, contact allergies (caused by a reaction to topical substances such as bedding, flea powders, dog shampoos, or other chemicals), and inhalant allergies (caused by airborne allergens such as pollen, dust, and mildew).
  • As with all breeds, the ears should be checked regularly, and the teeth should be brushed often.

Recommended Health Tests from the National Breed Club:

  • Patella Evaluation
  • Ophthalmologist Evaluation
  • Thyroid Evaluation

Excercise Needs for the Australian Terrier

  • The Australian Terrier is a high energy dog and regular excercise is necessary to avoid it becoing bored and unhappy as this will lead to undesirable behaviour.
  • Approximately 60 minutes of walk or play is necessary to keep the Australian Terrier happy and avoid boredom
  • When taking for walks or for excercise they should never be unleashed, as their desire to hunt is very strong and will not resist chasing rabbits, rodents, etc straying so far from home that they may not be able to make it back home.
  • If he plays indoors or in the yard then the yard needs to be fenced.
  • If he plays in the yard or Garden, ensure that he is supervised as they have a tendency to dig holes eveywhere unless trained an supervised!.
  • Get your Australian Terrier involved in regular obedience classes at the intermediate or advanced level, or in ongoing agility classes (an obstacle course for dogs). Or join an earth dog club, where terriers are encouraged to dig and tunnel after small critters (which are secured in a sturdy cage so they can't be harmed).

Training and Socialization Needs for the Australian Terrier

  • Australian Terriers are wilfull, stubborn and get bored very quickly when it comes to training. So the training sessions need to be short, exciting and rewarding with treats and toys.
  • Australian Terriers must be taught to come when called.
  • Though more amenable to training than many other terriers, Australian Terriers must be taught at an early age that they are not the rulers of the world.
  • The Aussie fits into any household. This breed loves children, so use them to exercise Australian Terrier. Games, jogging, hikes and other outdoor pastimes will keep the Australian Terrier amused.
  • Start training your puppy the day you bring him home.
  • Take him to a puppy kindergarten class at 10 to 12 weeks and continue training as he grows up to keep him mentally and physically active. Digging, chasing, and barking are this
  • Terrier’s favorite activities, so it is wise to keep him busy to prevent him from these undesirable behaviors.
  • These experiences as a young dog will help him grow into a sensible, calm adult dog. Keep in mind, though, that this feisty Terrier can be quarrelsome with other dogs. Be careful with introductions.
  • Socialize, Socialize, Socialize the Terrier as much as possible, the more you socialize him, the better he will behave.

Grooming Needs for the Australian Terrier

  • The Australian Terrier’s harsh, weatherproof, double coat does a good job of repelling dirt and mud, and is very easy to maintain.
  • A quick brushing once a week is usually enough to keep it in fine shape. Bathe him in mild shampoo as needed every three months or so.
  • Check the ears once a week for dirt, redness, or a bad odor that can indicate an infection, then wipe out weekly using a cotton ball dampened with gentle ear cleaner recommended by your veterinarian to prevent problems.
  • Regular tooth brushing with a soft toothbrush and doggie toothpaste will help keep the Australian Terrier’s teeth and gums healthy and his breath fresh
  • The long hairs that grow in front of and between the eyes can irritate the eyes if left unchecked; fortunately, they are easily plucked out with tweezers or fingers.
  • Excessive bathing and shampooing of the Australian Terrier can have a negative impact on the its coat, rendering its dirt-shedding capability ineffective as well dry and flaky skin.
  • Introduce him to grooming when he is young so he learns to accept the fuss and handling of grooming graciously.

Comfort Needs for the Australian Terrier

The australian Terriers compact size and low shedding, low maintenance coat make them a good choice for Apartment Dwellers. They are a great watchdog due to their loaylty and alertness when something is out of the ordinary. We recommend a Medium Sized Dog Bed for your Terrier.

Just like all of us, dogs also need a place of their own, their own little corner, that is why Dog Beds are an essential part of a dogs daily life. It is the place where they feel safe, kosi and comfortable. A dog bed in the house is where the dogs home is, the rest of the home belongs to others. Just like your children retreat to their rooms and the adults retreat to their corners in the home, so does the dog retreats to its dog bed. Dog and Pet Beds are essential so as to ensure that the Pet does not feel alienated or a ‘2nd class citizen’ in the home. The dog bed is like a place of refuge and space. Kosiproducts offer three main types of dog beds to help your dog feel comfortable and at home as well giving your dog that beauty sleep it needs. • To cater for different sizes of dogs, different medical and health needs.
  • The more comfortable the dog feels, the better the quality of the sleep be.
  • Ensuring the dog bed is large enough for the dog to lounge on and sleep on.
  • Dogs love the feel of the earth (soil) the fleece fabric covers mimic that sensation, which the dogs love pawing at before resting.
  • Ensuring the dog beds can be easily kept clean, these dog beds use removable and machine washable fleece fabric covers.
  • Value for Money - Dogs in time will eventually ruin their dog beds, that is why these dog beds are designed in a way that if taken care, they will last a long time and when the time does come to replace the dog bed then the cost is not a daunting one.
