About the Afghan Hound Breed Dog

  • Originally known as 'Tazi', the Afghan Hound is a hunter bred to think on it's feet. Strong willed, indepedentent, aloof, self confident and has unique features in the cold mountains of Afghanistan.

Nutrition Needs for the Afghan Hound

  • Afghan Hounds are athletic, active dogs, so be mindful that your dog is getting enough good nutrition to meet his needs.
  • Recommended daily amount of 2 to 2.5 cups of high qaulity dry food a day, divied into two meals.
  • How much your adult Afghan Hound eats depends on his Size, age, build, metabolism and activity level. A highly active dog will eat more than a less active dog.

  • Like with all dogs you need to keep your Afghan Hound in good shape. Regularly give him the 'Eye Test' and 'Hand Test' First, look down at him. You should be able to see a waist. Then place your hands on his back, thumbs along the spine, with the fingers spread downward. You should be able to feel but not see his ribs without having to press hard. If you can't, he needs less food and more exercise.

Excercise Needs for the Afghan Hound

  • Due to their nature of being sighthounds, they have a very strong instinct to run off in pursuit of oerceived prey. As a result keeping them on the leash is a MUST!
  • Afghan hounds need need a lot of excercise to burn their energy, short walk and short runs are not enough, they require long runs. They may look delicate and elegant, but these hounds love to run and play. Afghan Hounds are known for their speed and in some countries are even classed as racing dogs.
  • They also need to be left to run 'full out' in secure fencing tall fencing, as the Afghan Hounds are lean and strong and can jump very high. High, secure fencing is a must if you plan on keeping your hound in a yard.

Training and Socialization Needs for the Afghan Hound

  • Once Bonded the Afghan hounds are very loayl and affectionate, making it difficult for an adult Afghan Hound to adjust to a new home.
  • Though they can make fine apartment dogs and true "couch potatoes," Afghans require plenty of exercise to ward off boredom and destructive behaviors such as chewing.
  • Though highly intelligent, Afghans can be difficult to train because they are stubborn. They are highly sensitive to harsh correction, which often elicits a refusal to obey. They respond best to gentle guidance and firm discipline.
